“It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or the backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B.
It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.” ― Cheryl Strayed, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
A hiking and wild swimming morning. Grateful for a cloudy day.
Re-imagination. The evolution of you. – I had this sentence bubbling in my head on Friday evening. Over and over the words popped up in my mind. l reworked them until I was happy with the meaning. At the time, I was riding pillion on the scooter with my husband, on our way back through the mountains. The warm wind buffeting my shirt and hair as I held on and looked at the starry sky. Suddenly I saw StarLink – the Tesla string of satellites above our heads. What an incredible sight! Someone imagined this (Elon Musk) and made it happen. It’s quite an outstanding achievement. Technology does not stop evolving and neither should we.
If you don’t like your life, imagine and re-imagine it over and over until you find a life you love.
Downsize, minimise, improvise and find a life that brings you joy. Money and possessions can’t do that. Experiences and people can.
On Friday evening we’d headed out for a ride on the scooter with no fixed destination. Just a left turn here and a right turn there. We arrived at the beach and listened to music from a nearby restaurant playing, as the sun set into the Atlantic Ocean.
A perfect evening. So very different from our life in Devon.
I’m happy that we decided to return to Portugal to change our lives completely. This definitely is not our last adventure, we have plans for so much more. Our imagination has no limits.
Never stop dreaming.

“When you stop worrying about; the grey hair, squidgy belly, flabby arms, wrinkles, crinkles and all that comes naturally with ageing, you have found freedom, and most importantly, more time to enjoy life without self imposed limits”. – Gail McNeill.
A fresh makeup free morning today. I love wearing makeup, but I also love for my skin to feel wild and free. Just a generous application of @ravenbotanicals Raven Botanicals facial oil, after shaving my face – yes, shaving my face is normal! (I shave every couple of months to prune my flooffy face. It feels good!).
Low key brows today, it’s all about the red lipstick. This one is from my favourite cruelty free brand @muacosmetics ‘Reckless’ Velvet matte liquid lip. Photo straight off the iPhone 12 Pro on portrait mode. I do appreciate the good light here so much.
Pity nobody will see my lipstick as I still have to wear a facemask everywhere in Portugal. We are only allowed to remove it whilst sitting in a café or restaurant.
My hair has a little bit of salt spray to give it some texture, but I really do need to give it a trim and tame it a little. I’m having trouble finding my hairdressing scissors, which is surprising as I live in such a small place!
I have my first project meeting about my house build today. It’s only taken 4 years to get this far. Patience is key when building your own home. It will be worth the wait I am sure. You can find the design here: loulehills.com if you want to see the design of the house. If you follow any interesting accounts who are also building a home, tag me in or send me a DM. I’m keen to find other crazy people!
Seb has booked a flight and will visit in one month. I’m so excited to see him again. He’s had some brilliant news this week, an offer of employment from the company he’s been contracting for. We are so happy for him! He’s had a crazy year – from working as an officer on a cruise ship, to a contract bringing an unsafe vessel from Greece to Portugal (and rescuing a young man floating in the water) to the perfect job for him. It’s with a great company who will support him and develop his career to Captain. Hoorah!
This week seems to be going on forever, or is it just me? Not a bad thing. Time is so precious, if it’s going slower it’s a bonus.
